Living Wills Make Your Wishes Clear
The struggle between the family and the spouse of Terry Schiavo, regarding to right to withhold food and hydration from a woman who had been in a persistent vegetative state for fifteen years, brought national attention to the need to make your last wishes clear to your friends, family, and loved ones. One way to avoid such a situation is to record your wishes regarding withholding or withdrawing life sustaining treatment in the event that you suffer from an incurable or irreversible catastrophic injury or condition, and you are no longer able to make decisions regarding your own care. Your wishes can be memorialized in a document called a Living Will. You can also appoint a surrogate, who will have the power to make medical decisions on your behalf, in the event that you are unable to do so.
